Dermat Breaks Down: Best Bond Repair Treatments Available in India

The short answer: If you want genuine bond chemistry in India, the two options most people mean are Olaplex, built on a patented maleate molecule, and K18, built on a synthetic peptide. Both are sold here, one through an official India storefront and both through authorised retailers. If what you actually have is heat, hard water and combing damage rather than chemical damage, a lipid and barrier repair protocol is the more sensible spend, and that is a different category with different honest claims.

One system, three essential steps: protect, cleanse, restore

What does "bond repair" actually mean inside a hair fibre?

Keratin's shape is held by several forces at once: "Ionic forces, hidrogene bonds, Van de Waal forces and disulfide bonds" (Gavazzoni Dias, Int J Trichology 2015;7(1):2-15). The disulphide bond is the strong one, and it is what "bond repair" refers to. Each cystine unit contains two cysteine amino acids connected by two sulfur atoms, forming a disulphide bridge (Barreto et al., Skin Appendage Disord 2021;7(4):265-271). Those bridges sit in the cortex, the inner bulk of the strand, not on the surface.

Hydroxide straighteners work by breaking them, converting roughly one third of the cystine to lanthionine, which is why Barreto and colleagues flag a higher damage risk for that route.

Mechanical stress breaks them too. The clearest measurement is on wool, not human hair: "disulfide labeling in wool fibers during the process of stretching or breaking the fiber is not random but disproportionately affects the cysteines at specific sites" (Harland et al., Biophys J 2022;121(11):2168-2179). Both are keratin, so the mechanism is informative, but that study did not test human hair and this article will not pretend it did.

Which bond repair treatments can you actually get in India?

Four genuinely different things are sold under this heading. They are not interchangeable.

Option Active or mechanism Independently documented The brand's own claim In India
Olaplex Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate A dermatologist-authored review says it "attempts to reform the disulfide bonds, thus strengthening the hair shaft" "The heart of the patented OLAPLEX Bond Building Technology", which "can help repair broken bonds on a molecular level" Yes, authorised retailers
K18 sh-Oligopeptide-78, branded K18PEPTIDE The same review notes a bond builder "uses 18-peptide technology to put amino acids back into the hair shaft" Works by "reconnecting polypeptide chains and disulfide bonds broken during bleaching, color and chemical services + heat" Yes, official storefront and retailers
In-salon reducing and oxidising services Deliberate opening and re-closing of disulphide bridges Well established cortex-level chemistry; Barreto et al. document the hydroxide route Varies by salon Widely, in salons
Acid smoothing, lipid and barrier repair Citric, maleic or lactic acid; lipids and conditioning agents Acids "lower the hair shaft pH, decreasing cuticle swelling to smooth the surface of the hair shaft" Varies Widely, including EnagenBio

Note the verb in that first row: "attempts to reform" (Draelos, Dermatology Times, 29 August 2025). The hedge is the source's, not ours, and any brand telling you the question is closed is ahead of the evidence.

Worth knowing too: what is in a peptide bond builder. K18's own published list for its leave-in mask reads, in order: water, alcohol denat., propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, dicaprylyl ether, cetyl esters, behentrimonium chloride, polysorbate 20, then sh-oligopeptide-78. The peptide sits ninth, and the eight ahead of it are the vehicle and the conditioning system. K18 also says to "let sit for 4 minutes, do not rinse out" and to "use for 4-6 washes post-salon service, then as needed", so it is a post-service intervention, not a forever product.

Is there an Olaplex alternative in India?

It depends on what you want to replace.

Same chemistry? You are looking for another maleate-class Michael acceptor, and you should read the ingredient list rather than the marketing.

Same felt outcome, meaning hair that is softer, easier to comb and less prone to snapping? The field is wider, because much of that comes from surface chemistry. Draelos is explicit that acid-based products lower the shaft pH and reduce cuticle swelling. That is a real mechanism, and it is not bond reformation.

EnagenBio is not an Olaplex alternative, and we are not going to claim to be one. EnagenBio does not make a disulphide bond builder. It makes a barrier and lipid protocol, which is the second route above, not the first.

Is there a K18 alternative in India?

Same split. A comparable peptide leave-in means another product with a peptide active high enough in the list to matter. If you are solving post-colour roughness without a peptide, the acid, lipid and conditioning route is the alternative, and cheaper per wash.

Neither is a substitute for changing what is damaging your hair. If bleach every eight weeks, daily straightening or hard water is the cause, the treatment is downstream of the cause.

How do you tell which category your hair actually needs?

Ask what happened to your hair, not what it looks like.

  1. Chemically processed? Bleach, hydroxide straightening, relaxing, keratin-style smoothing, repeated colour lifting. That is cortex damage, and bond chemistry is the relevant conversation.
  2. Mechanically and environmentally worked? Heat styling, tight tying, rough towel drying, hard water, sun, combing dry hair. Largely cuticle-level, so barrier and lipid care is the answer.
  3. Both? Common in India. Barrier care between salon appointments, salon chemistry only as often as your hair can carry it.

If your hair has never been chemically processed, a bond builder is very unlikely to be the product you are missing.

Where does EnagenBio's Hair Repair System honestly fit?

Row four of that table, and nowhere else.

The Hair Repair System is ₹2,448 for a 200 ml + 200 ml + 40 g pack and runs as a sequence, which is what "Protocol" means in practice:

  • Step 1, Melt-in Balm+, a pre-cleanser balm used before washing. Shea butter (Butyrospermum parkii), tocopheryl acetate, BHT and Vitamin E. Warm it between your palms; it is a solid balm, not a liquid.
  • Step 2, Hair Cleanser, which cleanses without disturbing the natural balance and pH of the scalp and hair.
  • Steps 3 and 4, Duo-Conditioner, used as a rinse-off conditioner and then as a leave-in.
Science-backed repairing proteins and protective lipids

The pack is described for relaxed, texturised, coloured and chemically treated hair, the population most interested in bond repair. The approved claims, and the only ones EnagenBio makes, are that it repairs damaged hair fibres, improves softness and manageability, strengthens the hair barrier, and reduces frizz with continued use. Nothing in that list mentions disulphide bonds, and that omission is deliberate.

How to use the three-step Hair Repair System

Why a pre-wash step exists at all: it is the lipid that stays in the cuticle layer, not the one that reaches the cortex, that reduces how much water the fibre takes up (Gavazzoni Dias, 2015). Surface work is where the honest value sits.

What should you check before buying any bond repair treatment in India?

  1. Which layer does it claim to act on? Cortex or cuticle. A brand that will not say is telling you something.
  2. Where does the active sit in the ingredient list? Ninth is not the same as second.
  3. What was measured? A percentage, a fibre-strength test, a sample size and a duration are data. "Repairs bonds" is a sentence.
  4. How long is the intended course? Four to six washes post-service is a different purchase from a daily routine.

What to expect, and when

For EnagenBio's texture and repair products, including the Hair Repair System, the window we work with is one week, framed as individual experience rather than as a promise. That is typically when softness and manageability register first. Hair growth runs on a different timescale entirely and is not what this category addresses.

What nothing here can do is undo a chemical service. Damaged hair grows out. The fibre you already have is managed, not reset.

Frequently asked questions

Is bond repair the same as a keratin treatment?

No. Keratin-style smoothing is a shaping service using heat and cortex-level chemistry. Bond repair means reconnecting disulphide bridges rather than reshaping the fibre.

Can a shampoo repair bonds?

A cleanser's contact time is very short. Treat bond claims on a shampoo sceptically and ask what was measured.

Does EnagenBio sell a bond builder?

No. EnagenBio's Hair Repair System is a barrier and lipid protocol. If a disulphide bond builder is specifically what you want, EnagenBio is not the brand that makes one, and Olaplex and K18 are the two names you are probably already considering.

Is the peptide route better than the maleate route?

Nobody can honestly tell you that from the published record. Different mechanisms, different evidence bases, and no head-to-head result we can point you to.
